Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters & Chesapeake Bay Candles

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponI'm a tad bit embarrassed that I'm just getting my fall decor up now - so "late" in October. Seems reasonable enough, but when I think about how I had everything up at the end of August last year, I feel really far behind. Fall is my favorite time to decorate and I like to keep it around as long as possible since the rich warm colors work so well in our home so I'm surprised I waited so long. But if it's one thing I've learned over the years when it comes to home decor, if you force it, you'll never be happy with it.

This year I needed inspiration to get moving with my fall decor. I wasn't about to just pull out my totes of fall decor from last year and put everything in the same exact place. There is no fun or creativity in that. I just had to be patient and wait for something to come along to get me moving.

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponAnd that something did finally come along by way of the Chesapeake Bay Candle Fall & Holiday Heritage Candle Collection.  I received the large Pumpkin Latte jar candle, the small Firewood Fig jar candle, the small Vanilla Biscotti jar candle, and the Trio Votive Gift Set Holiday Edition which includes Balsam Fir, Cinnamon Spice, and Snow by the Shore. The minute I unwrapped the Pumpkin Latte jar candle, I fell in love with the colors on the label. I spent quite a bit of time sniffing each candle and reading about each scent, the essential oils used to make these soy candles, and the story behind Chesapeake Bay Candle company. These candles are designed and poured right here in the United States. Gotta love that, right?!

Before I go on and on about my new candles, I'll tell ya quick how I made my succulent pumpkin planters...

Last year I kept things very neutral with my rustic pumpkins and neutral fall tray vignette but this year I was inspired by the orange on the label of the Pumpkin Latte jar so I decided to bring in classic pumpkin orange colors.

While there is nothing wrong with purchasing a few real or faux pumpkins and setting them out as fall decor, that just isn't me. I have to do something with the pumpkins first. Something that will make them special and unique to our home. I decided that something was going to be a quick and easy project - succulent pumpkin planters.

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponI've had this succulent planter on our back deck all summer and it did surprisingly well, however with the change of weather, it was time for it to come inside. The crazy thing about these succulents is how drenched they got all summer. We got quite a bit of rain, especially at the end of summer, so I'm really surprised they did so well considering there is no drainage on that ceramic bowl. Heck, I didn't even add rocks to the bottom of that bowl when I planted those succulents!

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponTo make the succulent pumpkin planters, I used carvable faux pumpkins from Michaels, containers from IKEA that I already had on hand, and rocks for drainage. I turned the container from IKEA upside down and placed it on the top of the pumpkin, traced it with a Sharpie, and then used a cheap-o pumpkin carving knife to cut the top. Super easy! Well, easy as long as you use a pumpkin carving knife. I tried it with a regular knife and it did not work well at all.

Turned out pretty cute, huh?

I certainly think so!

I placed one of the smaller pumpkins on our TV stand, and the others on our coffee table.

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponLast year I decorated the tray on the coffee table with all neutral colors. While I was happy with it, this year I wanted color and height. The faux pumpkins give it the color and warmth I was inspired by from the Pumpkin Latte candle, the succulents and Chesapeake Bay jar candles give it the height it needed, and the faux corn cobs and fall floral picks make it extra festive. I even added a few cinnamon sticks and mini dried pumpkins for added detail.

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponNow I'll admit, when I'm looking for candles, it's not just the scent that I'm interested in. I look for three things when I purchase candles; what they are made of (I prefer soy), if the jar itself is pretty, and if the lid can be used as a base.

Although I've been purchasing Chesapeake Bay tea lights on a regular basis for years, I wasn't familiar with their jar candles until I received this collection. These jar candles most definitely pass my test. :) I love the frosted glass of the jars and I really love the lids which coordinate exceptionally well with our reclaimed wood coffee table and TV stand. Little things like that matter to me. ;) The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the fact that as I'm writing this I have the Pumpkin Latte candle lit, and I'm now craving a Pumpkin Pie Latte from Caribou Coffee. (Yes, it's all about Caribou Coffee here in Minnesota, not Starbucks. Shocker, eh?) For all of you essential oils people, the Pumpkin Latte candle includes cinnamon leaf oil, benzoin, and bay oil.

Last night I had the Vanilla Biscotti jar candle lit and stepped out of the house for a few minutes to let my son know it was time to come home (apparently he didn't see the street lights come on...) and when I walked back into the house, my first thought was "CAKE"! No, my husband did not bake a cake in those few minutes that I was gone. It was the Vanilla Biscotti candle filling the house with it's wonderful scent. Just check out the description of this candle: Creamy, warm milk whipped with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar and toasted almond delight the senses on a cold winter night. Steamed vanilla and a dash of nutmeg embrace the evening as we settle down by a warm fire. Sweet and indulgent, vanilla extra grounds this delicious treat. Includes essential oils of cinnamon and davana.

Yup, they got that right. For a second though I thought I was going to be eating vanilla cake while watching reruns of The Office

Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponIt's going to be a bit chilly here in Minnesota this weekend so I'm looking forward to burning the Firewood Fig and Cinnamon Spice together. I might even break out the Balsam Fir. Between the woodsy birch, cedar notes, evergreen pine, fresh balsam, and eucalyptus, I won't miss having a fireplace at all! Fall Decorating with Succulent Pumpkin Planters and Chesapeake Bay Candles #chesapeakebaycandle #sponI thought of completely skipping over Snow by the Shore.....but I just can't be that mean. You guys, I want to be selfish and greedy and purchase every single Snow by the Shore Chesapeake Bay candle ever made and keep them all to myself. How something can smell that phenomenal is beyond me. I've decided that this is now "my" candle. Please don't even try and purchase it because I want them all.

Honestly though, when I first read the description of Snow by the Shore, I wasn't drawn to it. The first snow of the season arrives, enchanting the landscape with notes of fresh mint, galbanum and sage leaf. Soft florals of white violet, ivy, and rose sparkle under a blanket of snow. Creamy sandalwood, musk, and warm tonka rise to greet the season. Includes essential oils of cedarwood and lemon. Gosh was I wrong. It's really the loveliest candle my nose has ever experienced. Ever. Really.
