Kitchen Tour – A Black and White Blank Canvas

If a few months ago anyone asked me what kind of décor of a room I liked, I would have never answered: “black and white”. However, my preferences changed. As soon as I began to move all the decorations from the kitchen in our previous home to the new kitchen, I realised that everything was so bright and colourful that it didn’t look well in the new place. Our last kitchen was full of red and yellow colours and looked pretty good but not this one. I have decided to make the kitchen in the classic black and white style and I’m admiring the result a lot. The new kitchen has some rustic and vintage details. I also have the intention of adding the same elements to the room since this is an open concept floor plan and our living room has some splashes of rustic and vintage styles too.
If you have any ideas about the décor of this room, feel free to share your suggestions with me on Instagram, Facebook, or even send me an email! Right now the room is empty and not decorated at all, so I would be terribly glad to receive your opinion about it. I’m sure I’ll get inspiration from your comments!

The big vintage canvases that hang on both sides of the window are very appealing to the eye. They are alike old subway signs. I managed to buy them at a very low price. I’m also planning to get a black dish rack, which will be a great match with white dishes. The huge vintage style clock caught my eye at once, though I was a bit worried about the cream colour of the number. But the clock looks good in the room. Also, the colour shades of the wall hangings are cream, too.

Another addition to the design of the kitchen is the big table that has a farm-style. On the table, there is a grey metal tray filled with different cups, classes and tea napkins, which we use every day. We don’t usually eat at this table so we don’t have to move the tray from the table too often. I’ve also thought of buying a special table runner because I don’t want the table to get scratched.

Despite the black and white style, I couldn’t help adding something colourful to the room. The figured blue rugs are the only coloured detail in the kitchen for now. It might seem to be strange that one rug lies near the fridge but I have an explanation. I put it there because the fridge sometimes leaked and the water overflowed the floor so it was very easy to slip there. I solved the problem with the rug.

I have been looking for a rack with several tiers to put our glasses there but I haven’t seen it anywhere yet. That’s why there is a small white tray on our table now. I’ve decided to leave the glasses in full view of everyone because my family members tend to drink water or something else from these glasses very often. I think, when the glasses are kept on the table, it is much easier to use them. Also, I’m seeking a runner for this island table as well as for the wooden one.

Here you can see some things that we brought from our last house. They’re all above the cabinets. I think the baskets, the sign and the white ceramic pitchers of different sizes make the atmosphere great. For some reason, I don’t care about the glass jars and I’m planning to replace them with something else. I’m sure I will get more ceramic pitchers. Also, the baskets need to be filled with some things which I am going to buy as soon as I see something appropriate.

This issue has made me hesitate a lot. I thought of putting some shelves on either side of the big clock. It might be black shelves which I would fill it up with white glasses. There is also an option of hanging a small black metal sideboard. There was one near my home, but on web stores, it costs $1,000 or even more and I don’t ever buy some expensive things.

There’s amazing scenery from our kitchen windows so I don’t want to hide that beauty with any curtains. Although as our flat is very high up, the sun shines so brightly through this window every morning that it’s impossible to see anything. Also, the white colour of our kitchen reflects the sunlight so the flame doesn’t let us do anything there. If I finally decide to hang some covering for the window, it will be a bamboo blind. I think the bamboo is good for covering the window because it won’t totally block the light from the window. Please see also article Christmas in the Kitchen.

There is also a small room near the kitchen, and we’ve decided to use it as a pantry. Firstly, it was supposed to be a closet but a pantry seemed to be a much better idea so we made that space into a very useful room for keeping products. I dislike having a lot of things on the shelves and this pantry was a great decision to the everlasting problem. Now I have the opportunity to lot all the things out by the shelves.

This little room is yet empty. Soon I will accessorize the pantry’s walls and counter. I use the counter mainly for some stuff for making coffee so I think it would be great to make this place special for coffee, though it might be a bit selfish as nobody else in my family likes coffee.
I am grateful that you have joined me on this trip around my new black and white kitchen!
I saw a picture of a table you painted that was off white on the base and darkish taupe/brown color on top. Was wondering what paint colors you used.
